Well if you wanted to know more about John Stockton and his record stats... this is where you'll find more. I like this kind of stuff and this page is really for me to just have fun, but you can look. If you pay me money.
John Stockton Career Assists Record: 15,806
I thought i'd take a look at how many years total contending players would have to play in the NBA to accrue 15,806 assists. It took John 19 seasons playing 79.15 games per year on average. For my purposes right here i'll just look at active players in the NBA now.
These players are either in the top 25 all-time career assists or they are people who have come up in discussions i've read about who could possibly break Stockton's record. Lets take a look. These stats factor in how many games each of these players average per year, and their assist per game average over their career. Stockton not only had a high apg average, but also rarely missed a game. Without his high game total per year, he would not have quite as many assists.
Jason Kidd - 11,614 current assists. 17 years in NBA
9.11 apg average
Kidd will have to play a total of 23.23 years to break John's record at his current pace.
Steve Nash - 9,338 current assists. 15 years in NBA
8.5 apg average
Nash will have to play a total of 25.59 years to break record.
Andre Miller - 7,090 current assists. 12 years in NBA
7.18 apg average
Miller will have to play a total of 27.01 years to break record.
Chris Paul - 4,287 current assists. 6 years in NBA
9.94 apg average
Paul will have to play a total of 22.45 years to break record.
Rajon Rondo - 2,987 current assists. 5 years in NBA
7.62 apg average
Rondo will have to play a total of 27.01 years to break record.
I've read alot of talk of people who think Rondo would break John's record.... i'm not really sure why. I think its probably because the first 10 games or so of the 10-11 season he was averaging like 15 apg. He didn't keep that up tho.
Deron Williams - 4,225 current assists. 6 years in NBA
9.18 apg average
Williams will have to play a total of 22.91 years to break record.
So there you have some numbers. The way my calculations go, the more years a player has played, the more accurate the numbers will be. Players who have played fewer years could change a lot more and the numbers could be more off. I'm pretty sure the Kidd, Nash, and Miller numbers are pretty much right on. They've played long enough that i don't think their style will change or anything, and they are only getting older... their apg average will probably only go down from here on out.
The other three, Paul, Rondo, and Williams though could have their apg number go up... possibly. I don't really think so, but possibly.
I thought i'd look at Stockton's first 6 years so we could compare better to Paul, Rondo, and Williams. That way you can't really argue that their stats are the way they are just because they don't have as many years under their belts.
John Stockton first 6 years - 5,075 assists.
10.43 apg average
Stockton would have broken his own record in only 18.63 years. Thats almost a half year less than he did play. So his pace actually slowed down some after his first 6 years. If Paul, Rondo, and Williams slowed down their pace at all from here, they'd be farther back than they already are.

John Stockton Career Steals Record: 3,265
Same thing as with the assists pretty much. Lets take a look at the numbers.
2.2 spg average
19 years to set record
Jason Kidd - 2,492 steals
2.0 spg average
22.41 total years to break record
Kobe Bryant - 1,661 steals
1.5 spg average
29.63 total years to break record
Kevin Garnett - 1,613 steals
1.3 spg average
32.49 total years to break record
Chris Paul - 1,029 steals
2.4 spg average
19.40 total years to break record
I couldn't really find anyone else currently playing who had even one season with enough steals to be on track to breaking Stockton's record. Chris Paul is on a pretty good pace. If he plays enough years and keeps up his pace, he could get close and could break the record.
